Excellent stay at this hotel, English speaking staff, outstanding International buffet and breakfast. Free upgraded room, early check-in and late check-out was not a problem. The indoor swimming pool with jacuzzi (not working but still a pleasant warm change to the slightly chilly pool). Sauna in the men’s changing room, steam in the ladies. Our children enjoyed the May holiday activities on offer too. We’ll be back.

A New Hotel Already Challenged By Maintainability Struggles

Liangzhu, a developing district area of Hangzhou. A district rising in growth from the rising tech industries and nearby Hangzhou tourism creates substantial growth throughout what was once just a rural area of Hangzhou. Built-in the growing sub-district of Dufucun is the 2022-opened Liangzhu InterContinental Hotel. A new hotel that is yet to receive its 1-year milestone since its opening in August 2022. The hotel sits on a cultural industrial park, with office neighboring buildings, an Aeon Mall, and a Ferris Wheel surrounding the hotel. Nobody has written an English TripAdvisor Review for this hotel, therefore I made a trip to this hotel (my 28th visited InterContinental property) to see how it compares to the consistency of what I see in the InterContinental Hotel Brand. Here are my honest yet critical findings at the InterContinental Hangzhou Liangzhu Hotel:
For starters, Liangzhu is an inconvenient location based on location. A 1-hour subway ride from Hangzhou East Station and a few hundred meters from the Dufucun subway station takes you to the hotel. Upon arrival, you would walk or drive around a magnificent front entrance fountain area with a metallic statue of a running horse into the grand marble textured grand lobby with modernized pieces of furniture unique to Hangzhou’s cultural design. In a separate hall to the right is the reception area with warm, professional, and friendly bellmen & lobby representatives on standby to check you in or out of this new hotel. Welcoming me to the hotel coincidentally at the front desk was the Club InterContinental Manager Fannie Wang, who checked me into my room in just a short amount of time. She guided me around the lobby and its grand facilities, along with thoughtful tips such as closing the curtains and turning on the fan to prevent my room from overheating. A great kickoff to a stay that I have looked forward to for a while!
Upon entering my upgraded 1 King Classic Ferris Wheel View Room, which poses at a generous space of 45 SQM, I noticed the room’s modern aesthetic and how new it was. From the elegant wooden floors to the beautifully patterned round carpet beneath the comfortable king bed. The wooden leather bedside desks are very stylish to the InterContinental branding profile colors and the mood lighting that lights the space is thoughtful based on balancing daylight and night skies. The marble floors from the door to the room match the monochromatic color profile which leads to the spacious closet and the bathroom with a separate bathtub and shower, along with a Japanese toilet from the Villeroy & Boch company. Waiting for you at the table are some hand-held fresh fruits and unique Hangzhou light snacks such as a Green Soy Bean Cake and White Chocolate. Complimentary Tibetan Water was offered in bottles during my stay, which is a nice touch.
What was not a nice touch however was the overall cleanliness of the room. First, the toilet seat was not wiped down cleanly as the toilet seat was stained. Furthermore, hair was found on my bedside table along with the unfortunate prospect of finding what I believe were yellow food stains on the marble floors next to the closet. Unhappy with the poor room cleaning maintenance, I spoke to Fannie about the uncleanliness of the room, to which she started promptly apologized and helped facilitate getting me a much more clean room space.
Whilst waiting I visited two lounges that are signatures at the hotel: The Club InterContinental Lounge and the Lobby Lounge. The Lobby Lounge is located directly upon entering behind the grand piano platform. Surrounding the big space are golden-colored partitions that separate into a more intimate space with lounge couches, chairs, and tables. You can order any drink you’d like at the Lobby’s Bar just a few paces away from the seating area. The Club InterContinental Lounge is located on the M-Level. Once you come in you are welcomed by a lounge attendant into the intimate yet quiet space with a TV living room, a meeting room, a dining area, a self-service bar, a buffet, and the grand balcony space that showcases the Ferris wheel. The furniture is modern with thoughtful touches in designs that reflect the Hangzhou modern lifestyle. A buffet service is provided with adequate yet delicious Afternoon Tea Service and Happy Hour Service. This lounge is well-maintained by the cute yet lovely Vivi Tao and her associate, which I, unfortunately, did not remember her name. The Club InterContinental Lounge is well managed by Fannie and I rank my Club InterContinental Experience with other Club InterContinentals I have been to at #5 out of 19 Executive experiences at InterContinental.
One thing to note however was how badly maintained the balcony on M-Lebel was outside the Club Lounge, as the unused bar area that may have been set up for special events was falling apart with electrical light cords dangerously exposed and the marble bar area. Some of the plants that I have seen on the balcony were already showing their age as well, as the summer certainly dries them up in the process. One advantage to note however is that it’s a spacious area to walk around exclusively to Club guests.
After waiting for a while to let Fannie prepare a much cleaner room, Fannie returned and surprised me with a massive upgrade to the 1 King Bedroom Suite on the higher floor. Doubling the size of the 1 King Classic Room at 90 SQM, there is an added living room space with couches and a small dining table. Since it was a corner view room, I also had a 270-degree view of much of the Liangzhu area. There is an added vanity desk space in a similar bedroom area to the Classic Room. In addition, there is a double vanity sink and a free-standing bathtub in the bathroom with an additional powder room next to the door. To me, it was as standard as it gets with Deluxe Suites at the Chinese InterContinental Hotels, and what was presented to me was a nice showcasing of compensation and an effort to create a better impression of the hotel.
Breakfast took place at the hotel’s All-Day Dining Restaurant Commune, an InterContinental signature restaurant chain that is found in parts of the country such as the new Shanghai Harbour City InterContinental Hotel and the Shanghai InterContinental Wonderland Hotel. This is a restaurant that focuses on modern luxury communal space designs with comfortable seating and service, along with a wide variety of food options that fit the palette of multicultural cuisines from around the world. At this branch of Commune, I had Eggs Benedict, a wide variety of Chinese options such as pot stickers and pickled vegetables, fresh-watermelon juice, and a wide variety of fruits. Overall it was an above-average breakfast experience and I rank at #7 out of 18 of the InterContinental Hotels with Chinese Buffets that I have visited. For lunch on my day of departure, I had a Club Sandwich with Salad and Fries via the very simple QR code ordering room service.
The swimming pools were a nice place to relax and enjoy the summer outside or escape it inside. The facilities were well thought out, but the locker room’s private changing room was not lockable and the dryer has complications of being able to work. In addition, there is a wide variety of workout options at the gym next-door along with SPA treatment facilities. There are a vast variety of meeting rooms and restaurants that are yet to open, such as the Chinese restaurant on the M-Level and the Steakhouse as well.
So how would I judge my stay overall? Overall, I would say that my stay was well thought out by the Warm Club InterContinental Team. I left knowing that I was always welcomed back by the very warm and lovely staff. The hotel has still a long way to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and its economic impact, which has impacted the ability to maintain the hotel on an effective basis. Under the leadership of the General Manager Stephanie Li (who for some time general managed the Wuxi InterContinental Hotel that I wrote about), I think the hotel for its uncommon location and uniqueness stands out from the rest of the InterContinental Hotels in Hangzhou. I wished however the InterContinental standards of maintaining the hotel were upheld, just how I wished the standards were still on the brand’s level in Wuxi. The hotel has much to improve on and I look forward to seeing a better InterContinental Liangzhu Hotel, which is still preferable to me over the InterContinental Hangzhou or InterContinental One Thousand Island Resort. I rank this InterContinental hotel #18 out of 28 from what I have personally experienced.
